BSA requires that all members of a Boy Scout troop provide medical and healthcare information to be used for the safety and welfare of the Scouts and their leaders.
Troop 48 requires that you always have a current medical form on file with us in the Scout Office. A copy of the form should be kept by the family or individual. Parents and/or individuals need to complete Parts A and B of the BSA medical form for each Scout or adult leader annually.
For summer camp, hiking, backpacking, and for other strenuous or high adventure Scouting activities, a medical exam or physical is required for Scouts and adults. A doctor or healthcare professional qualified to give the physicals must examine you and complete part C of the BSA form.
Because the nature of most of our outings and even day hikes in the mountains demand significant physical activity, and because we are usually more than 30 minutes ground transportation time from hospital emergency rooms, all Scouts and adult leaders participating in troop or patrol outings must complete Parts A, B, and C of the medical form each year.
For Cumberland Island and BSA High Adventure bases (such as Florida Sea Base, Philmont, Northern Tier Canoe Base, and West Virginia Summit), all Scouts and adult leaders attending must complete parts A, B, C, and possibly an alternate form provided by the High Adventure Base. They must also read and share Part D with the examining health-care provider.
We suggest that any time you have occasion to see your family doctor, you think about your camp physical and take a BSA medical form with you to save another appointment and additional cost.
The troop keeps these medical forms on file and makes key information from the forms available to adult leaders in charge of camping trips where this information may be needed in case of a medical emergency. Important data includes medical insurance policy numbers and emergency contact phone numbers. Other important details would include listing significant allergies, physical activity limitations, and medications to be taken at camp.
